I'm writing a short story titled "Fading Light from a Dying Star."

I need to figure out the space drive systems. I want there to be two different ones.

The basic set would be for short distance. Thrusters, if you will.

I'm trying to figure out what the best long distance method would be. Wormholes is overdone. I'm thinking about hyperspace/fold system, but I'd rather do something more inventive. Any ideas?

Another idea would be that the jump drive is actually a living creature and the only thing capable of going that fast. The people have domesticated or enslaved them to power their ships.
