I'm writing a short story titled "Fading Light from a Dying Star."

I need to figure out the space drive systems. I want there to be two different ones.

The basic set would be for short distance. Thrusters, if you will.

I'm trying to figure out what the best long distance method would be. Wormholes is overdone. I'm thinking about hyperspace/fold system, but I'd rather do something more inventive. Any ideas?

One that is used on occassion and is based on real science is to have a solar sail deployment which collects solar radiation to convert to energy. Darth Tyrannus's ship in Star Wars was like that as are the jump ships in Battletech.

Another idea would be to use something akin to a Star Trek transporter on the ship that can teleport it at a molecular level to the destination. You would need a lot of math guys aboard to run that one for the calculations would need to be quadruple checked.

An idea might be that whatever sort of drive you have the guys that know the math involved would be a class unto themselves and revered in the culture. They could hold a great deal of power because they control interstellar transportation. There may be a lot of bad feelings among the crew toward them, or they might be worshipped.

Just a few ideas. :-)

Another idea would be that the jump drive is actually a living creature and the only thing capable of going that fast. The people have domesticated or enslaved them to power their ships.
