Each Friday, I plan to post a couple of paragraphs from a current Work In Progress.

This will encourage me to keep writing and hopfully entertain you.

This week's WIP is from a short story titled "The Sky God's Daughter." I started writing it thinking about a friend that is returning to Iraq and leaving her family behind.

"The Sky God’s Daughter"

by Jason Andrew

In the great shimmering spire of Atrahasis, the daughter of the sky god wept. Clattering servitors composed of golden gears and silver springs dutifully presented purified water and half a pomegranate with the crimson pulpy pungent seeds displayed like a minute temple. Shades of dead priests from a hundred worlds watched over her and dried her tears. Enchanted wooden animals merrily danced around her desperately trying to elicit a hint of a smile. Nothing could cheer the heart of a daughter worried that her father would die.

She waved them off impatiently and pulled the curtain of rainbow colored dream-pearls around her wooden canopy bed. She closed her eyes trying to hear her father. There was great magic contained within her bed. Her father had crafted it from a dead branch of the world tree known as Yggdrasil and it enhanced the bond between them. Always she could hear his songs in her dreams. He must be very far away for his voice to sound so weak, she thought.

She peered out her windows by habit now. The night sky fluctuated. One by one the stars aligned into fighting regiments as her father rallied the heavens for war against Mithras. Brilliant novas and dark stains and crimson nebulas pocked the blanket of night. She knew not how well the war fared; only that the light still shined and that the bull had not yet claimed Atrahasis.

“I am so sorry I disappointed you, Father.”
