Writing Metrics

I woke up a bit early this morning and I was refreshed. I think since
insatia discussed and then adjusted our financial plans, I’ve felt a little better and less stress and thus finally got a full night’s worth of rest.
Summer is an odd time for writers. A large portion of anthologies and other markets close around June 30th /July 1st. You really have to control where you spend your time.
I prioritized markets by pay, prestige, and cool factor. Sadly, there were two at the end of the list that I missed, but you have to make choices.
It has been three months since I got back into the game and so it is time to examine metrics. Metrics are important for measuring the success of a process and I really do need to thank
insatia for helping me create my new system.
Date Range: 4/1/2010 to 6/29/2010
Numbers of New Stories Written: 14
Number of New Stories Submitted: 11
Number of Old Stories Trunked: 11
Number of Old Stories Edits and Submitted: 15
Number of Pending Stories: 5
Total Number of Stories Submitted: 29
Total Number of Sales: 4
Total Number of Stories Current on Hold: 5
What do these numbers mean? Well, I’m clearly writing more, which is a good thing.
I’m confident enough that I can trunk stories and not feel bad about it. I figure a learning experience is always a good thing and if there is anything of value in the trunk stories, I can mine them later.
In progress:
I'm still working on "Recovery" for an editor that very kindly asked me to submit something to him.
"Funeral Pyre for a King in the Shadow of Ragnarok" was started for a cool themed anthology, but I don't think I will finish it in time. I really like the idea of this anthology, but alas, you have to make choices.
"The Fisherman's Wife" is intended for a wereanthology. I wanted to give this one a month before running through my rewrite/edit. The deadline is in December, but I want to try to get in early for once.
"Seven Treasures for a Murderer" is a flash piece clearly influenced by watching Criminal Minds too often. I previously stalled on an ending, but I have it now.
