This is my weekly WIP super-hero story. I am having so much fun that I've been giddy.
This anthology is about a Dystopian Super Hero future. And then I realized that the main problem with these kinds of stories is that the super-heroes go back in time, come back from the dead, or resets the universe somehow. I invented the Einstein Rosen Karmic Compensator Effect to avoid all of that. Techno babble for the win!!!
“Children of Tomorrow Live in the Tears that Fall Today”
by Jason Andrew
Do you remember the old joke before the Cataclysm? Heaven installed a revolving door for the Protectors.
The Spider whispered that to the Saint during Paladin’s third funeral at Valhalla Falls. Civilians and heroes alike celebrated the career of the infamous Paladin and mourned the loss of a friend. The Protectors battled the Napalm Chicken a dozen times over the years. One lucky shot and all that was left of Paladin was the tattered remains of his iconic crimson costume and charred bones.
I was there as invisible witness and to allow the shade of a great hero to say his final good-byes. “Jason Adelbert Carl, you have lived well and touched many lives.” The shade of Paladin ignored my words. His shimmering immaculate uniform and sparkling soul leaves no doubt as to his eternal reward. I place my hand on his shoulder. “Each of us has a destiny and we must pass in our time to our reward.”
Paladin kept his eyes on the funeral and his friends. The beautiful Nykee shed golden tears. Melancholy vibrations from the crystalline Myrrum set a perfect mood to mourn. Moon Druid and B’Hall served as an honor guard for the casket. Stand-Up Guy delivered the elegy, trying to lift everyone’s spirits. This time his jokes fell flat.
“You know, Dead Mamma, I don’t have a lot of regrets. Most of my family passed years ago. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to see them.”
Heroes always ask about the afterlife. “I do not know what lies beyond the veil, only that it is your reward.”
Paladin chuckled self-consciously and flashed a perfect smile that had been featured on the old war bonds posters. “The Infinity Formula gave me five extra decades of youth. Did you know that in the 50s I dated Marilyn Monroe? Can’t really complain about that, I guess. I’m just a bit disappointed by the turnout. Is that tacky? The Guardian didn’t make it. We saved the world together. I guess he said everything he needed to the first two times.”
I pointed to the bright blue sky. “He hovers far above the earth over this exact spot and he mourns alone in his own way. The Guardian feels the weight of your death intensely. He feels as though he has failed you.”
“Any chance I could tell him good-bye? I’d love to tell him how much he meant to me, to all of us.”
This was always the most difficult part. “We must say all that is in our hearts before we leave for the sunless lands.”
Paladin nodded, understanding. “Maybe I’ll tell him the next time around.”
He followed me quietly through the Gate of Eternity. I wish I would have broken the rules. It might have changed everything.
Six months later, Paladin appeared from an alternate earth where he had bested Napalm Chicken in Fresno. The Saint had battled the Time Master and prevented him from changing history to a time-line where the dominant sentient beings on the planet evolved from dinosaurs and on his way home saved his friend creating a divergent timeline.
Few of us were really surprised. The universe had tragedy and pain, but it was in essence a good place where heroes would eventually overcome the odds. And when the universe had been rocked off balance, the heroes would force it back into alignment. The Spider returned from a dystopian future to prevent the assassination of the President and the reign of the Dark Guardian and saved the future.
All of us believed in the future until the Cataclysm.
Muertos and his city of dead flesh transformed the universe. The energy released from the Cataclysm caused what Mr. Majestic termed the Einstein Rosen Karmic Compensator Effect. Our universe is now alone in the cosmos. The revolving door has been jammed. Time-travel is now impossible. The bridge between life and death shattered. Ghosts walk the world until they fade into nothing.
We are alone and there are no more heroes.
