The question becomes simple.
To use the word swarthy or not.
I'm going for the Sinbad type of feel in this scene, but has the word passed on? Kind of like you wouldn't use the word negro expect in a historical context.
The passage is behind the cut.
They peered over the side of the Tempest, gazing at the ships passing. Pip waved to a passing dhow ship with a triangular lateen sail and a carvel built hull. The swarthy sailors dressed in long white cotton tunics with red vests lined with bright gold buttons held up their arms in salute. Their captain was a handsome man of large stature with a thick mustache and beard. He bowed slightly upon the passing of the Tempest. The avatar giggled and blew him a kiss and then rang her bell. Dylan wondered if he should feel jealous. It didn’t seem right for the ship to flirt with other captains, even if he was only a temporary captain.
