I am big fan of Torchwood and the New Doctor Who series.
I was very disappointed that Torchwood series 3 was only a limited series. That said, I really enjoyed Children of the Earth.
Spoilers
The first three episodes were pure genius. I liked the build-up of the threat and the government turning on Torchwood. The production values were awesome. The kids were creepy. And everything really clicked.
The fourth episode was decent until the end. I liked it up to the moment where Captain Jack forgot that he's not the Doctor. If this was a Doctor Who episode, the Doctor could have given that speech and then pulled something out of his ass and saved the day.
Captain Jack might be immortal, but he is still human and has to work with the laws of the universe. The 456ers slammed them down and Ianto Jones paid for it with his life. I would have preferred a different scenario where Torchwood tried some bad-ass plan and failed.
Ianto died worse than Tasha Yar. And that made me sad.
I liked the final episode. Captain Jack stopped trying to be the Doctor. He did the dirty work and paid the price.
I worry that there won't be a Torchwood in the future. I feel like this series hasn't really explored all of the possibilities.
insatia sent me a link to a wonderful essay about fandom and Doctor Who. I highly recommend it.

I wrote a Doctor Who fan fiction story. Well, I wrote it for an anthology that lost the license and then released it as fan fiction. You can see it here: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=30697

This is an interesting experiment. The one thing that television can do better than a set novel is the concept of a serialized fiction. Every week you get to find out a little bit about your favorite characters. This is a good way of matching that special addiction. I wonder if it will work.
