Working it
May. 27th, 2010 10:16 amSome weeks in the life of a writer are slow. I like to think of it as the training montage from Rocky. You work at repetitive tasks over and over again building up your creative muscles.
This week was eaten by performing the background tasks required of all writers. There are submissions to track and queries to send out. Editors want their edits returned to them. And much like the beasts in the jungle, writers need to constantly hunt for their next meal and conquest. And of course, there are other minor tasks to complete such as websites to maintain. I realized that my author’s page at Amazon disappeared when they reset everything and so I had to run through and add books from my bibliography.
With a bit of prodding, I am working on my weakness in networking. This is an important skill for a writing career. I’ve started to see how awesome it works for me with technical writing, but I have always been a bit shy about it with my writing. I’m taking steps for that. And I’m learning that part of networking is advertising for other people and helping other people.
A number of friends have been wanting help with their writing and help getting started in Seattle. I’ve started a local writing group to do just that. If you are interested and live locally, drop me a note.
It can be lonely and frustrating. Building your endurance is key to staying a writer. I failed a bit on that in 2008 when my personal life became a bit too crazy. A support system helps you enjoy life and writing.
