[livejournal.com profile] insatia has declared that today is my special day.

The last three weeks at my contract technical writing job has been hell. I worked a total of 150 hours in three weeks. I doubt that any young boy dreams of being a technical writer, but I've made my living for the last twelve years solely as a writer. How many people can claim that?

Freelance work has also been extremely crazy. I didn't realize it until this morning that I'm back in the game. Last year, I quit working on projects. Something about the idea of writing just depressed me. Writing became more about the ends than the journey. Somehow I turned that around in my head. Now I am having to schedule work in order to complete the projects and the new opportunities becoming available to me.

Saturday and Sunday I spent my timing working and spending time with [livejournal.com profile] insatia. [livejournal.com profile] insatia has been exceptionally wonderful this past month and tolerant of me ignoring her for large periods of time to work. Yesterday, I sun burned myself helping her sell her jewelry at the Freemont Fair.

And so she declared that this would be my day. I'm trying to decide what to do with it now.

To all of my friends that I have completely ignored, I will see you soon as I emerge from my work cocoon.

I have always loved the concept of fiction dealing with the nature of fiction and our relation to stories. I suspect that has to do with my own soul wrangling over the idea.

"I think the idea of a secret live of a character that even the author doesn't know is kind of exciting" says Bernadette, the leader of the book club.

I think the international community of fanfiction writers would agree. Austin was one of the first writers to inspire a solid community of fanfiction writers called the Janeites. Robert Kipling, writer of the Jungle Book, wrote a short story titled "Janeites" about a group of World War I soliders who rabid fans of Austen's novels.

Jane Austin's work has inspired multiple interpretations and reimagining. Austin’s work has inspired everything from the movie Clueless to the upcoming book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

This movie revolves around the idea of a book club trying to live up to the ideals set forth in Austin’s novels. Several of the character’s stores are echoed in various plots from the novels.

The best scene in the movie is when Grigg, a modern day Darcy, meets Joceln (aka the movie’s Elizabeth Bennet) at a science fiction convention and has to explain why the creepy goth girl in the elevator won’t acknowledge her existence. Spoiler Alert: Turns out she is playing a crazy game called Vampire and is under obfuscate. Heh!

I imagine this is a movie I will watch again.

The Land of the Lost is a lot better than I remember. I've been watching the marathon today on the Sci-Fi channel.

The acting is horrible. The special effects abysmal.

And yet, the writing was consistent. The characters slowly learn about the Land of the Lost and all of the details are consistent, even if the science isn't perfect.

I actually am curious about the new movie coming out.
